Gippsland Water to build organic waste facility with $4.8M federal funding via Food Waste for Healthy Soils program
A local water corporation, Gippsland Water, has received $4.788 million to improve facilities and efficiency with funding provided by the previous federal government.
Local MP Darren Chester said Gippsland Water received funding through the Food Waste for Healthy Soils fund in partnership with the state government. "Supporting industry to adapt and improve recycling capabilities is important for viability and to also improve the efficiency of operations."
Gippsland Water also runs organics recycling facility, where they turn waste from business and industry into a high-quality compost used on local farms
Additional diversion of waste
Mr Chester said, "The project will expand water and electricity supply networks, expand leachate runoff systems and install new plant and equipment such as windrow turns, conveyors, dump trucks and wind sifters."
"Upgrading the current organic waste processing facility will enable additional diversion of waste that would otherwise end up in landfill and will also cater to the food organics garden organics (FOGO) collection commencing in the region." Mr Chester said.
Upgrading capabilities
Mr Chester said the Dutson Downs facility would be completed in 2024 and support local jobs during construction. "The construction phase will support 33 jobs with eight ongoing positions once the facility is up and running."
"Upgrading our manufacturing capabilities supports local jobs now and into the future. Reducing the amount of waste going to landfill and will also support the agricultural sector by providing the organic waste for productive use on farms and agricultural land." Mr Chester said.
