Explore the delights around Sale in Wellington Shire 2023
"Belly-care" focuses on improving well-being through food and wine. Tinamba and Maffra offer exquisite dining options, and combining a visit with the Tinamba Food & Wine Festival on Sun 16 Apr, 2023 is recommended.
Yes, belly-care. It's a bit like self-care, aimed at improving well-being and happiness, but it's achieved by filling your belly with delectable morsels, namely food and wine. Just north of Sale, Tinamba and Maffra offer exquisite dining options, so exploring the charms of the north is a no-brainer for food lovers. While you can have an indulgent weekend around Sale any time of year, we recommend combining your visit with the annual Tinamba Food & Wine.
Wander Sale's heritage streetscapes and check into Mansi on Raymond for a luxurious stay, and dine at Tinamba Hotel for a refined degustation dinner with exceptional food options
What your visit looks like
Day 1
Begin your day with a river cruise aboard the Rubeena with Port of Sale Heritage Cruises. Cruise through the Port of Sale to the Swing Bridge aboard a charming wooden boat, taking in wildlife and birdlife in the lush river banks, and local histories.
Spend the afternoon wandering Sale's heritage streetscapes, then check into your accommodation at Mansi on Raymond. Book the Georgian Bathhouse for generous open living spaces and ensuites for each bedroom. Unwind in the natural mineral bath in your own private courtyard.
Head to Tinamba Hotel, the destination restaurant for a refined degustation dinner. While the restaurant is housed in a classic country hotel, the outstanding food is far from your usual pub grub options. Expect to find hand-made tagliolini with spanner crab, wild venison ragout with blueberry or confit duck leg with a cherry jus.
Rejuvenate at the natural mineral bathing, massage, explore Maffra and visit Blue Gables Vineyard for wine tasting and woodfired pizzas, or Ride the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail
Day 2
Start your day with a theme of rejuvenation at Element @ Mansi, a wellness centre with a difference. The enviable range of treatments includes natural mineral bathing, an infrared sauna, magnesium float, oxygen therapy alongside massage, reiki and reflexology. Work up an appetite exploring Maffra, including the Gippsland Vehicle Collection, Sugarbeet Museum and Macalister River Park.
Look for the charming blue gables peeping over rows of vines, and you'll know where Blue Gables Vineyard got its name. Sip and slurp your way through a tasting of rose, pinot noir, shiraz, sangiovese and moscato. Then settle in for antipasto platters and woodfired pizzas, followed by a selection of dessert pizzas (hello lemon fraiche pizza!).
If you're feeling active, you can ride a section of the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail to work off lunch, or take another bottle of wine back to enjoy in your private mineral bath at Mansi.
