Jessica Jackson of Seaspray Surf Life Saving Club takes out open women's beach flags event at second Victorian beach carnival for 2022-23

Life Saving Victoria marks the start of the patrol season, with more volunteers patrolling the beach.

Jessica Jackson of Seaspray Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) has defeated the competition at Life Saving Victoria's (LSV's) second beach carnival for the 2022-23 season, taking out the open women's beach flags event. Jackson did not let being Gippsland's sole competitor faze her, backing up her flags win with a third in the open women's beach sprint and teaming up with Anglesea SLSC's Pierre Lee, Cooper Stanley and Kate Walker to take out the open mixed beach relay as a composite team.

Marking patrol season

LSV Acting manager aquatic sport David Potter said it was great to show off LSV's athletes' rescue ready skills on the first day of the patrol season at a bustling inner-city beach.

"This weekend, lifesavers at many locations across Victoria raised the red and yellow flags to mark the start of patrol season and at South Melbourne it was even more exciting to have 100 of our volunteers who will be patrolling these beaches across the summer, displaying the skills that translate to saving lives."

"From the iconic beach flags event, demonstrating the quick reflexes and thinking required in a rescue situation, to the traditional belt and reel race, combining proud lifesaving history and modern day rescue practices, it shows how truly unique our sport is." Mr Potter said. The third beach carnival for the season will take place at Hampton LSC on Friday 16 December.

• 2nd: Mornington LSC (Lucas Parrish, Chelsea Rosewarne, Isabella Rosewarne, Thomas Schaefer)
• 3rd: Mordialloc LSC (Pippi Brailey, Tyler Crombie, Emily Jackson, Thomas Wale)
