Some of Gippsland's best restaurateurs have been putting lockdown time to good use, creating new must-do culinary experiences. Paynesville welcomes wine bar and providore, sardine CANTINA, while Lakes Entrance's Sodafish puts the humble fish and chips on a pedestal.

Sodafish - Lakes Entrance

The floating restaurant in the heart of Lakes Entrance has made waves in foodie circles, having already been awarded a chef's hat. Sodafish reinvents the humble fish & chips offering, dialling it up a notch with fresh seafood sourced from neighbouring fishing boats. We're not talking food miles here, we're talking food metres!

The restaurant, offering absolute waterfront views of Middle Boat Harbour, is an homage to the outstanding local seafood in a casual dining setting. Enjoy the freshest wild and sustainable fish, oysters and shellfish which chef and owner Nick Mahlook (from Crown's high-end seafood restaurant, The Atlantic) describes as "nostalgic charm meets modern classics". Expect to find wood-fired octopus, smoked mussels, King George Whiting with sea parsley, and classic fish and chips on the menu.

Downstairs is a fish and chippery with local beer and wines to go. They can be enjoyed on the lower decks or take away to the beach. The crew are slinging crispy battered flathead and potato cakes like there's no tomorrow, best washed down with a Sailors Grave Brewing ale of Gippsland's best restaurateurs have been putting lockdown time to good use, creating new must-do culinary experiences.

The team behind the popular hatted restaurant sardine eatery + bar, have just opened the doors to a simple, stylish and fun wine bar and food store, serving up cheeses, charcuterie and conserves from Victorian producers and across the globe.

Think bespoke khorason and malt loaves of bread, an entire wall of wine and all sorts of cheeses you've never heard of. The decor is oh so chic, and has us in the mood for a vino or two.
