Investing in sport

The funding, announced by Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence, and Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale, is part of a broader initiative supporting regional football and netball clubs across Victoria. The total project, valued at just over $700,000, will enhance the playing surface by improving drainage, irrigation, and resurfacing. A new 130,000-litre water tank will also be installed to ensure efficient water use.

Council has committed $450,000 to the project, with an additional $25,000 investment from Wonthaggi Power Football Netball Club. The existing surface, drainage tank, and irrigation system are estimated to be 25 to 30 years old, putting them well past their life expectancy. The much-needed upgrades will significantly improve the overall surface, subsurface drainage, and irrigation, ensuring a safe, high-quality playing surface for athletes and the wider community.

Celebrating community sport

The announcement was celebrated at the ground today with Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale, Mayor Cr Rochelle Halstead, Wonthaggi Power Football Netball Club President Peter Liddle, Senior Football Coach Jarryd Blair, Netball Operations Manager Bec Farrell, and Medical Coordinator Zoe Blundell.

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Rochelle Halstead, welcomed the investment, stating: "This upgrade is a game-changer for our community and region. Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve is a critical sporting and events hub for Bass Coast and beyond. These upgrades will ensure our community, from grassroots players to elite athletes, have a safe and high-quality facility to enjoy for years to come."
