Latrobe Magnesium invests $39M for stage one Magnesium Production Plant in Morwell
Latrobe City Council welcomes the news that Latrobe Magnesium is investing $39 million for a Stage One Magnesium Production Plant in Morwell.
Latrobe City Council is also thankful to the Victorian Government for their support of the project through the Regional Jobs Fund. Stage One of the Magnesium Production Facility is expected to be built by June 2023, creating 43 new full-time equivalent jobs for the region. The facility will utilise fly ash, a waste resource from power generation, to create refined magnesium which is in high demand.

Providing a new industry
Council has been supportive of the development over many years as it will support Latrobe City's transition efforts by creating new industry opportunities. Mayor of Latrobe City, Councillor Kellie O'Callaghan said the magnesium facility would provide new jobs and economic growth for Latrobe City. "Council is grateful to see Latrobe Magnesium's investment in a magnesium production plant in Morwell after a significant amount of preparation work that has been underway for over a decade. This is even more vital now following the closure announcement of AGL Loy Yang A in 2035 this week."
"Council has always been supportive of the magnesium production plant as it will provide a new industry for our region - with job opportunities available for our local people. This supports our transition efforts and will strengthen diversification across our region. We look forward to the opportunities that will come from this development next year and beyond," said Cr. O'Callaghan.
