Family of Doctor Ashley Gordon launch petition urging changes to police powers and bail laws in wake of his tragic death
Doctor Ashley Gordon's family launches a Parliamentary petition after his tragic death. Sponsored by The Nationals Member for Morwell, it urges three actions.
The family of Doctor Ashley Gordon has launched a Parliamentary petition in the wake of his tragic death in January. Sponsored by The Nationals Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron, the petition calls on the state government to take three actions:
- Afford police greater 'stop and search' powers, including the ability to stop and search if they have reasonable suspicion
- Reinstate section 30B of the Bail Act
- Cancel plans to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14
"Ash was a much-loved son, brother, uncle and friend and his death sent shockwaves through his hometown here in the Latrobe Valley and throughout Melbourne where he was a dedicated and passionate doctor. I have been asked by the Gordon family to sponsor this petition calling for change so that no family has to experience the unbelievable grief they have endured," Mr Cameron said.

Lobbying for change
Dr Gordon's sister, Natalie, said she was determined to lobby for change in her brother's name. "We just hope to see everyone get behind this petition and support some change so that no-one ever has to feel the pain that we're feeling," Natalie said.
"There are no words to describe how much I miss him, every minute of every day I miss him. Our bail laws are not working. There is zero respect from youth for anyone in authority and we need to crack down," she said.
It is hoped the petition will attract 10,000 signatures so it can be considered for debate in Parliament. Sign the e-petition Petition Police stop and search powersor download the petition and collect signatures.
