Jemmy's Point in Lakes Entrance transformation with funding from previous federal government and East Gippsland Shire

Renovation of Jemmy's Point in Lakes Entrance is progressing well, including a new toilet facility, enhanced vehicle access, and a raised viewing area. Darren Chester, secured a $1.5 million work package for this project.

Getting stuff done. The transformation of Jemmy's Point in Lakes Entrance is well advanced with local contractors constructing a new toilet block, improved vehicle access and an elevated viewing area. Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester secured $1.5 million for a package of works including improved pathways, with East Gippsland Shire Council contributing more than $700,000 and delivering the project which will be completed before the holiday season.

Total of $2.25 million from the former federal government, and East Gippsland Shire pledged $780,000, aiming for completion of Jemmy's Point transformation within six weeks, before the bustling tourism season

Project challenges and progress

Mr Chester said, "I will be the first to admit this project has taken a lot longer than I wanted but the end result is going to be pretty special. Several years ago, I started campaigning for funding to replace the old lookout at Kalimna on Hotel Rd. One thing led to another and the project expanded over time to also include a redevelopment of the park at Jemmy's Point, a new toilet block, linking pathways and the Kalimna rock wall redevelopment."

In total, we were able to secure $2.25 million from the previous federal government and East Gippsland Shire has also committed $780,000 to the total project which should be completed in the next six weeks, before the busy tourism season. Great to see local firms have won the contracts for the construction and other civil works which will benefit locals and visitors for many years to come.

East Gippsland Shire is managing the various projects which contribute to this large package of works and I'm looking forward to walking the trails and enjoying the views along this spectacular part of Gippsland. And yes, we are still fighting with the State and dederal governments to guarantee the funding to improve the pedestrian path alongside the Princes Highway which is in a disgraceful and dangerous condition. There's always more work to be done!
