Community feedback needed for Baw Baw Shire Roadside Weed and Pest Control Program Plan by 11 December 2023

Council seeks community input for the Roadside Weed and Pest Control Program Plan, crucial for preserving biodiversity and agricultural health that aims to guide weed and pest control till 2026, and public feedback for alignment with local needs.

Baw Baw Shire is calling for community feedback to inform the review of its Roadside Weed and Pest Control Program Plan, which guides the management of noxious weeds and pests on council-managed roadsides. The Roadside Weeds and Pests Program is an Agriculture Victoria initiative that provides funding support to eligible councils to plan and implement control activities.

Roadside control update

There are approximately 1400km of rural roadsides under council's management. These roadsides are a ready means for invasive plants and pest animals to spread throughout Victoria, threatening agricultural lands, parks and forests. Council uses its Weed and Pest Control Program Plan to make decisions and effectively prioritise the control of weeds and pests across this vast network.

With the current plan reaching the end of its life cycle, officers have prepared an updated draft plan which proposes how council will guide its roadside weed and pest control through to 2026.

Biodiversity protection plan

Mayor of Baw Baw Shire Councillor Annemarie McCabe says the plan, which requires review and endorsement by Agriculture Victoria, is crucial for maintaining local biodiversity and agricultural health. "Effective management of weeds and pests helps to preserve the habitats that are essential for our wildlife and plants."

"This plan helps ensure that our natural landscapes are protected for future generations to appreciate and enjoy. Public input will be invaluable in ensuring that our strategies align with both governmental guidelines and local needs," says the Mayor.

Ms McCabe added, "We know our local farmers and Landcare groups have a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to the realities of weed and pest control. We would love to tap into that knowledge and gather valuable insights from the community about their experience with council's current weed and pest control efforts to date, and their thoughts on our proposed updates to the plan."

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to review the draft plan and share their feedback and ideas. A brief survey is available now at the Roadside Weed and Pest Control Program pageand will remain open until 5pm, Monday, 11 December 2023.
