2021 Australian Netball Championships format revamped as September event at Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium postponed
The Australian Netball Championships will be played in a decentralised format this year, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to present significant challenges for sport.
The championships were due to be held in Traralgon from 13 - 19 September but have been revamped to enable the high-performance progression of athletes, coaches, umpires and officials in a coronavirus impacted environment.
Netball Australia and the Suncorp Super Netball league are in full return-to-action planning ahead of key government deadlines
Delivering the 2021 event
Netball Australia is working with all state and territory member organisations and the Suncorp Super Netball clubs to deliver a hub-based model in line with coronavirus restrictions and the original September championship dates, where possible.
An ANC winner will not be declared for 2021, with more details on the decentralised program to be communicated once confirmed. Netball Australia is committed to delivering the 2022 event with Latrobe City Council in Traralgon.
Support in the decision making
Netball Australia Executive General Manager Performance, Stacey West, thanked the Latrobe City Council for their support in the decision-making process and for the operational planning work done to date.
"As a result of government restrictions, the unpredictability of snap border closures and state lockdowns, the delivery of a centralised tournament in Victoria is no longer a viable option," West said.
Revamp that would enable opportunities
Ms West also said, "The revamp will enable opportunities in a covid impacted environment, for the ongoing development of athletes, coaches, umpires, and officials in their progression through the high-performance pathway.
"We'd like to thank our event delivery partner the Latrobe City Council for their understanding and ongoing support. We are committed to delivering a centralised competition in Traralgon in 2022."
