Gippsland Water secures 3.33 GL bulk entitlement from Tarago Reservoir to support growth in Warragul and Drouin
Gippsland Water secures a 3.33 GL bulk entitlement from Tarago Reservoir, supporting growth in Warragul and Drouin. Victorian government's Sustainable Water Strategy commitment fulfilled.
Gippsland Water has secured Drouin and Warragulgs water for the medium-term future. From 1 July, it holds a new 3.33 gigalitre bulk entitlement which will be supplied from Tarago Reservoir. The announcement follows formal approval by Water Minister Harriet Shing last month.
Entitlement fulfils Victorian government's Sustainable Water Strategy commitment for Central & Gippsland Region
Securing water supply
Managing director Sarah Cumming said Gippsland Water was taking a proactive approach to supporting continued growth in the Drouin and Warragul areas. "The rapid growth of Warragul and Drouin has put additional pressure on water supply and security, which required attention and planning. This entitlement takes into account future residential growth projections, climate change modelling and capacity to support economic development within the Baw Baw area."
The entitlement delivers on a commitment contained in the Victorian government's Central and Gippsland Region Sustainable Water Strategy. Ms Cumming said the commitment was the result of several years of advocacy, engagement and negotiation with government and water sector partners.
"I want to acknowledge the foresight of the Victorian government in approving this entitlement, which will provide the communities of Warragul and Drouin with the certainty they deserve. I'd also like to thank our water sector partners for their collaboration and commitment to ensuring Victorian communities have access to clean water," Ms Cumming said.
