Darren Chester joined the Filipino Seniors Carers Support Group for Harmony Week, discussing aged care, community safety, and the contributions of multicultural communities to the Latrobe Valley.
Providing more opportunities for older people to respectfully age with dignity in their own homes and improving community safety were key topics at the launch of Harmony Week celebrations by the Filipino Seniors Carers Support Group.

Honouring cultural diversity
Member for Gippsland Darren Chester was the guest speaker at Saturday's event in Morwell and highlighted the contributions made to the region by people from diverse cultural backgrounds. "Australians who were born here are considered 'lucky', but I regard you as 'clever' because you chose to move to our country and add to our culture."
"The people who have moved to our region, particularly after World War 2, have shaped the Latrobe Valley and given us a more multicultural community. We need to respect the contributions made by our older generations and make sure we provide services that help them to age well, preferably in their home environment where possible."
"At the same time, there's much more work to be done to improve community safety for older residents. You should feel safe in your own homes and be able to walk down any street in our towns without feeling intimidated by violent or anti-social behaviour," Mr Chester said.
