Join in the Australia Day celebrations across Baw Baw Shire

Everyone is invited to join and celebrate Australia Day 2022 festivities.

All across Baw Baw Shire, communities are hosting free and family-friendly events to celebrate Australia Day 2022. All are welcome to join in and celebrate in a COVID safe way. Most events will be held on Wednesday 26 January, except for two community celebrations scheduled for this weekend at Cullens Flat, Aberfeldy and at the Erica Caravan Park, Erica.

COVIDsafe practices and requirements will apply at all events, please remember to check-into any event that you attend, socially distance and sanitise your hands regularly

Australia Day activities

Here's a full list of the Australia Day festivities:

Aberfeldy - Saturday 22 January

12:00pm at Cullens Flat (Cullens Track). Join in a free community barbecue lunch and flag raising celebrations.

Cloverlea/Darnum

12:00pm at the Darnum Tree Stump. Celebrate Australia Day with a free barbecue.

Drouin

8:00am Drouin Civic Park. Enjoy a free community barbecue, morning tea, music entertainment, kids' activities, community group displays and a flag-raising ceremony.

Erica - Saturday 22 January

9:30am arrival for 10:30am start at Erica Caravan Park Cricket match, $5 entry per person to play, proceeds go to the CFA. Call the caravan park on 5165 3315 to secure a place. Enjoy a sausage sizzle by the Lions, with drinks, a coffee van and baked spud van are available. BYO picnic chairs and drinks.

Hill End

6:00pm at the Hill End Community Centre (formerly Old Hill End School). Celebrate with a flag raising ceremony and national anthem followed by a free barbecue, including a trivia quiz.

Jindivick

6:00pm at Kydd-Parke Reserve. Join in a flag raising ceremony and national anthem followed by a free family barbecue.

Labertouche

4:30pm at the Labertouche Community Centre. Join in a family cricket match followed by a free barbecue. Cold drinks available to purchase. Bring the family for a fun-filled afternoon and evening.

Longwarry

11:00am at Bennett Street Park. Flag raising ceremony, barbecue and activities.

Narracan

7:00pm at the Narracan Hall. Celebrate Australia Day with a free barbecue. BYO sides to share and/or sweets to share to make it a BBQ feast.

Neerim District

5:00pm Tarago Reservoir Park, off Jindivick-Neerim South Road. Fun activities and games for kids of all ages. Free family barbecue, soft drinks and sweets. BYO salads, picnics rugs and chairs.

Rawson

10:00am - 2:00pm Erica and District Historical Society, Pinnacle Drive, Rawson. Enjoy a free barbecue lunch and icy poles, bric a brac bargains at the Erica and District Historical Society.

Shady Creek

12:00pm at the Shady Creek Hall. Free barbecue lunch and sweets. The perfect chance to catch up with neighbours and community in traditional Aussie spirit. RSVP required to assist with catering to: denisemarriott1973@gmail.com and jessamurty@hotmail.com.

Tetoora Road

4:00pm - 6:00pm at the Tetoora Road Community Centre. Join in the flag raising ceremony and national anthem, followed by a free barbecue & ice-cream in the paddock area where there will be shade. Friendly games for children and adults; backyard cricket on the tennis court and soccer in the paddock. Also a history display for viewing in the hall. BYO chairs to enjoy the shaded areas and watch the activities.

Thorpdale

10:30am at Pioneer Park. Join in a flag raising ceremony and national anthem followed by a free family sausage sizzle and a kids Australia Day fancy dress competition with prizes.

Trafalgar

8:00am at the Trafalgar Public Hall. Trafalgar's Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year will be announced. Join in the annual free breakfast event - no bookings necessary. This event is run in partnership by TCDA, Trafalgar Lions and Trafalgar Public Hall.

Warragul

11:00am- 2:00pm West Gippsland Arts Centre. Formal Citizenship Ceremony and Australia Day Awards Presentation accompanied by a special performance of the Warragul Municipal Band at the West Gippsland Arts Centre, followed by family-friendly activities on the forecourt including a free community barbecue provided by the Warragul Lions Club, music entertainment, games and fun for the kids.

Yarragon

8:30am Market Street Park (corner Market and Murray Streets). Join in a flag raising ceremony with the local CFA, followed by a free breakfast of bacon and egg sandwiches. Enjoy music by local talents, a guest speaker, traditional thong throwing contest and activities run by the CFA. COVIDsafe practices and requirements will apply at all events. Please remember to check-into any event that you attend, socially distance and sanitise your hands regularly.

Appreciating the volunteers and residents

Mayor Cr Michael Leaney said, "There's so much happening throughout Baw Baw this Australia Day - and even a few events happening this weekend! I want to say a huge thank you to all the local volunteers and residents who organise these events with Council support."

"They play such a valuable role in our Shire. Be sure to join in the COVID safe fun and celebrate with your community. Along with my fellow councillors, I'll be getting out and about visiting as many events as I can. We all look forward to seeing you on Australia Day!" Mayor Leaney said.
