Baw Baw Shire Council will improve pedestrian safety on Normanby Street, Warragul, following the presentation of a petition signed by 56 community members.
The petition, organised by residents from Eisenhower and Stoffers Street, who are part of Melba Support Services self-advocacy group ARROW, sought the installation of a pedestrian refuge or raised platform to assist community members crossing the busy street.

Crossing the street safely
Following investigations by Council Officers, the installation of a pedestrian refuge has been endorsed by council for inclusion in its draft 2022/23 Long Term Infrastructure Plan, as part of the Local Roads Safety Improvements Program. The project is estimated to cost $43,920 (ex GST) and will include:
- Median island and pedestrian refuge
- New pram crossing ramps to existing footpaths on both sides of Normanby Street
- Renewal of road line markings and signage installation
Improved safety for pedestrians
Darren Pickett and Kevin Tyler, clients of Melba Support Services who cross the road for weekly medical appointments, say the road is extremely busy, particularly during peak times, which makes it very difficult to cross for people with a disability.
"The refuge will make it safer for everyone to cross the road, and that is our main concern, we can live with being a little late, but the improved safety of our clients and community members was our main priority." said Zac Vusic, who accompanies Darren and Kevin to their appointments.

Mayor Cr Danny Goss said, "I would like to thank all 56 individuals who signed the petition for getting involved and actively engaging with Council on an issue that impacts them. The inclusion of a pedestrian refuge in Council's 2022/2023 draft Long Term Infrastructure Plan is a great outcome and I commend the Officers for their work with the community.
