Gippsland Water's 12-week summer internship offers 12 university students career mentorship and hands-on experience across departments

Gippsland Water's summer internship program has welcomed 12 university students for a 12-week paid role, providing career mentorship, real-world experience, and opportunities in various departments, focusing on innovation and community impact.

Gippsland Water kicked off its annual summer internship program last week, welcoming 12 enthusiastic university students into the organisation. The 12-week program offers students the opportunity to launch their career and gain real life experience with a large local employer.

Local career pathways

Managing director Sarah Cumming said the program, which has run for more than 25 years, aims to create meaningful career pathways for young local people. "As one of the largest employers in the region, we want young people to know that exciting career pathways are right here on their doorstep."

"This program provides a unique opportunity for students to apply the skills they've learned at university to real life projects. They will receive dedicated mentoring and coaching from industry professionals throughout their time with us," Ms Cumming said.

Students are employed in paid roles relevant to their course of study. This year, positions have been filled in departments across the organisation, including planning, asset delivery, innovation and technology, governance, environment and healthy country, organisational development and corporate affairs.

Ms Cumming said Gippsland Water had a responsibility to provide the professionals of tomorrow a chance to discover all the water industry has to offer. "Our focus on innovation, customer value and community resilience means the projects these students will work on will make a difference to our customers and the wider community. I hope this cohort of students is inspired to embrace the many opportunities within the water industry," Ms Cumming said.
