Community Gardens Guidelines adopted by Latrobe City Council to promote sustainability and vibrant public spaces
Council approves Community Gardens Guidelines to aid groups in establishing gardens on council-managed land, fostering community health, sustainability, and aligning with the council's strategic directions for vibrant, accessible spaces.
Latrobe City Council endorsed the Community Gardens Guidelines at the November council meeting, following a community consultation process. The Community Gardens Guidelines will be used to help council support and guide community groups wanting to establish community gardens within Latrobe City on council owned or managed land.
The community gardens guidelines align with council's plan for healthy, accessible green spaces promoting positive health outcomes for everyone
Establishing a community garden
For community groups to establish a community garden on council owned or managed land, they must receive approval from council through an application process that is assessed on criteria outlined in the guidelines. This includes considerations about site planning, community partnerships, facilities, governance, funding and more.
Mayor of Latrobe City Council, Darren Howe said the release of the Guidelines will assist community groups to understand the parameters and responsibilities involved in establishing a community garden and create an opportunity for community focused health and wellbeing projects to come to life. Community Gardens are places where the community comes together to grow food, improve our health, build a clean and green environment, develop core life skills and cultivate vibrant communities," said the Mayor.
Guidelines for ownership
Cr Howe added, "Through implementing guidelines and an application process, council can facilitate a program where community groups and organisations take ownership of their project and are supported for long-term and sustainable success.
"These guidelines respond to the council plan Strategic Directions, especially the vision for healthy, abundant green spaces that are accessible, inclusive and safe, and promote positive health outcomes for all," he said. For more information, visit the Community Gardens Guidelines 2023 page.
