Broad-brimmed hats donated to Seaspray Surf and Lakes Entrance Surf Lifesaving Club juniors to help promote protection against skin cancer

Darren Chester supports sun safety by gifting broad-brimmed hats to Seaspray Surf Lifesaving Club juniors, fostering protection against skin cancer during beach activities, echoing his commitment across Gippsland.

Childhood and adolescence are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. UV exposure in youth elevates later melanoma risk, accounting for 33% of lifelong risk; half of UV exposure till 60 happens by age 20; children have thinner skin, thickening over time. Like many cancers, skin cancer has a long latency period, and overexposure during childhood and adolescence increases risk of developing skin cancer at a later age.

Seaspray Surf Lifesaving Club

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester is helping to promote the sun smart message by donating broad-brimmed hats to Seaspray Surf Lifesaving Club juniors. "It's fabulous to see the lifesavers of the future learning the skills that will keep them safe and provide a safe swimming environment on the 90 Mile Beach."

"I donate the hats each year to surf lifesaving clubs across Gippsland to ensure our juniors remember to protect themselves against skin cancer while they are enjoying training and competing on our beaches," Mr Chester said.

Lakes Entrance Surf Lifesaving Club

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester is helping to promote the sun smart message by donating broad-brimmed hats to Lakes Entrance Surf Lifesaving Club juniors. Mr Chester presented the nippers with new hats on the weekend with 120 juniors participating in this summer's program.
