Mr McDermott said the sponsorship deal was part of the National Australia Bank’s strategy to support innovative local businesses.

"We are becoming increasingly progressive in how we help local business owners and managers, and realised the Gippsland Innovation Festival is a great fit with our own business and how we are trying to help local businesses," Mr McDermott said.

"Many of our customers are active participants in the Gippsland Innovation Festival and we recognise that innovation represents a key part of not only their businesses, but also our future in the region," Mr McDermott said.

Speaking on behalf of the Gippsland Local Government Network (GLGN), Chair of the Gippsland Innovation Festival, Paul Buckley, said GLGN welcomed the National Australia Bank’s commitment.

"The festival is about bringing business, community and government together to encourage and celebrate innovation across the Gippsland region. The National Australia Bank’s commitment to this festival is greatly appreciated.

"Partnering with Australia’s largest and most successful bank in one of the country’s strongest performing regions makes sense. We share common ground, as the Gippsland Innovation Festival is the largest in regional Australia," Mr Buckley said.

Mr Buckley said that organisers have already begun the process of building the program of over 40 events for the next Gippsland Innovation Festival which will be held in May 2006.

"There will be a strong focus on innovation and how it relates to business, community, agriculture, the arts, education and the environment," Mr Buckley said.

Mr McDermott said that the National Australia Bank is working with event organisers to ensure the bank’s customers gain the maximum value from the NAB’s investment.

"It’s a long-term commitment and we are proud to be contributing to help promote regional development," Mr McDermott said.

"The NAB will also directly participate in a number of events during the festival throughout the region," Mr McDermott added
