Recycled road method to renew Matthew Street in Wonthaggi being used by Bass Coast Shire Council
Bass Coast Shire Council is using an innovative method to renew Matthew Street in Wonthaggi, between Broome Crescent and Stewart Street.
Around 300 metres of the road pavement is being renewed which will be constructed by recycling the existing road surface. Up to 100 per cent of the existing surface can be recycled, which is cost effective, keeps waste out of landfill and reduces greenhouse emissions by over 50 per cent. It also leads to faster construction times and results in a high quality finish.

Funding for recovery
Construction works are expected to start this week and will take up to two weeks to complete. This $175,000 project is fully funded by the Federal Government's Roads to Recovery Program and is part of Council's 2021/22 Capital Works Program.
The works will include over 300 metres of
- Road pavement renewal
- Road sealing works
- Line marking
- Other associated road infrastructure works
While work is underway, traffic management will include a lane closure and a worksite speed restriction of 40 km/hr. Outside of normal working hours the road will be returned to two lane traffic at appropriate speed restrictions. Please obey all traffic control measures onsite.
Council appreciates that these works may present an inconvenience and ask for patience during these times and the contractor will make every effort to minimise disruptions during construction.
