Input from Jam Jerrup residents on possible road upgrade encouraged by Bass Coast Shire Council

Bass Coast Shire Council wants to hear from property owners in Jam Jerrup, as part of a potential future road and drainage upgrade project.

This community engagement is occurring as a response to a petition presented to council in March 2022, calling for Jam Jerrup to be considered for re-prioritisation on council's priority list for road and drainage upgrade projects. Jam Jerrup is currently 20th on the priority list, however reprioritization may move it to second and see planning works start.

The results of the information gathering will be taken to a future council meeting for consideration of reprioritising Jam Jerrup on the priority list of road and drainage upgrade

Ensure enough support

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan said that it was fantastic to see a small community like Jam Jerrup pulling together and pushing for improvements to their town. "Now, we need to make sure that there is enough support for a road and drainage upgrade project to be reprioritised and considered in the future."

"Reprioritization will only be considered if at least 70 per cent of property owners are willing to financially contribute towards the project. This engagement process is not a formal vote about whether a road and drainage upgrade will proceed or not."

"The purpose of this stage of the planning is to gather information from Jam Jerrup residents about concerns or issues they may have and gauge the level of interest in the community for progressing this project." Cr Whelan said.

A road and drainage improvement project typically involves the upgrading of road pavement and sealing, installing concrete kerb and underground drainage pipes, concrete footpaths and lighting. However, the types and extents of upgrades needed are confirmed through community engagement.

Council has identified and prioritised areas like Jam Jerrup where the existing infrastructure does not currently meet the community's needs and expectations. These projects are typically funded through a Special Charge Scheme.
