Federation University in Churchill has new pathway for local students to study medicine

Local MP Darren Chester has welcomed the introduction of a new pathway at Federation University to allow local students to study medicine.

Mr Chester, who has advocated for more medical degrees to be offered regionally said it was fantastic to see it finally happening. "Moving away to Melbourne or interstate for higher education isn't an option for everyone and young Gippslanders shouldn't miss out because they are based regionally," Mr Chester said.

The universities are working together to improve health outcomes for Gippslanders and strengthen the future of the local health workforce by developing the three-year Federation University Bachelor of Biomedical Science Gippsland Partnership Program

Gippslanders to benefit

Mr Chester said, "Monash University continually resisted changing its entrance requirements to allow Federation University students a direct pathway to become doctors but this change in policy is very welcome. Young Gippslanders will now benefit from having the opportunity to study regionally and without the pressure of moving and living away from home."

Introduction of a new degree

Mr Chester said training students locally would help keep them in the community into the future. "Throughout Gippsland we are facing a shortage of doctors and the best way to solve this is to train more country students," Mr Chester said.

"Removing these barriers means young Gippslanders can study, undertake placements and eventually work regionally. The introduction of the new degree through the Gippsland Partnership Program is an investment in young Gippslanders and I look forward to seeing them take up this opportunity."
