Feedback for Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange strategic review to secure future viability and sustainability sought by Wellington Shire Council
Wellington Shire Council initiates a strategic review of Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange, seeking input from stakeholders via surveys and consultations for future improvements and sustainability.
Wellington Shire Council would like to hear from those willing to share their feedback as part of a strategic review of the Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange (GRLE). The Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange has been in operation for over 60 years and was upgraded in 2016 to ensure it could achieve modern animal welfare and environmental standards.

Saleyards future review
Following a sustained period of declining throughput, the strategic review will identify and investigate issues, and test opportunities identified to support the future of the saleyards. As part of this consultation, council is working closely with Livestock Agents and other key stakeholders, seeking input to identify suitable recommendations.
Noting stage one of the review was completed in mid-2023 which assessed the existing conditions of the saleyards, stage two is about hearing from saleyard stakeholders. Urban Enterprise together with agriculture consulting firm Outcross Agri-Services has been engaged to complete the consultation process and identify recommendations, each having experience in understanding the operations of regional saleyards.
To take part, you can complete a short survey or provide your contact details to speak with a consultant. It is open to all saleyard stakeholders including livestock agents, producers, buyers and transporters.
Saleyards participation urged
Wellington Shire Council Mayor, Cr Ian Bye invites all saleyard stakeholders to share their knowledge, experiences, ideas, and concerns relating to the current and future use of the saleyards.
"Despite previous council investment, we have seen a decline in throughput. I strongly encourage all those with an interest or connection with our saleyards to participate. This review is critical to ensure that council understands any challenges with the site and opportunities for future use and growth" Cr Bye said.
