Staying Alive driver expo at Leongatha Recreation Reserve to educate South Gippsland Shire students on road safety
On Thursday 16 June, students from several South Gippsland secondary schools attended the 'Staying Alive' Driver Expo at the Leongatha Recreation Reserve.
The 'Staying Alive' Driver Expo was designed to educate students who are close to getting their P plates about the repercussions of driving while distracted. Overall, more than 200 students were in attendance and eager to learn more about how to be safe on our roads.
During the expo, there were a number of activities including a live vehicle rescue, fatigue workshop, basic first aid, and driving around trucks
Support to the program
There was also a guest speaker, Holly Scott, who experienced a car accident in 2017 and is now a passionate road safety advocate. During her address to the students, she spoke about the accident, her recovery and the struggles she has to this day.
The program was run by South Gippsland Shire Council, with support from the South Gippsland Bass Coast Local Learning & Employment Network, Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, SES, Condoluci Transport, Evans Petroleum, Leongatha Automotive Services, South Gippsland's FReeZA Program and the L2P Program.
Impactful to the students
South Gippsland Shire Council Mayor, Mohya Davies said, "What a magnificent day this was! The breadth of activities and the way in which representatives from a number of organisations worked together to make the day a success was extraordinary."
"The weather was certainly not in our favour, but that did not dampen the spirits of not only the students who attended, but those who led the day and made it so impactful for these students. It was a big day for these young people, but the lessons they learnt during it will be invaluable once they get their licence and start driving alone."
"On behalf of South Gippsland Shire Council, I would like to thank everyone who supported the day and volunteered their time and resources to help this expo be so successful. This is a fantastic example of how we can all work together to achieve amazing things for our community." Cr Mohya said.
