Baw Baw Shire Council's annual Community Sponsorship Program is all about enabling events and activities that support vibrant social and community outcomes. Each year, many local clubs, groups and ambassadors benefit from council funding support, and applications for round 1 of the 2022/23 program are still being accepted until Monday 8 August.

Being able to participate

As part of the 2021/22 sponsorships program, Warragul Little Athletics Club received $1,000 in ambassadorship funding to support 33 athletes to compete at Gippsland Country Region Track and Field on behalf of Baw Baw Shire.

Little Aths Club President, Lisa Aubrey, submitted the application on behalf of the club to provide an opportunity for athletes to compete in different types of events.

"We like to encourage our athletes to step outside of their comfort zones, and competing in this event, at a new location, with new kids and parents around them, certainly did that," said Ms Aubrey. "Being able to participate in events such as this really shows athletes and families the possibilities open to them by being part of our club." Ms Aubrey said.

Application for the program

Of the application process, Ms Aubrey said she found it very simple and straightforward with easy to answer questions. "The short time it takes to complete the application is more than worth it when you get to see the benefits the sponsorship provides our athletes and their families," she said. "I would absolutely encourage other clubs or individuals to make an application to the program."

Similarly, Neerim District Progress Association (NDPA) secured $5,000 to assist with promotional material advertising the Neerim Bower Acquisition art event this past February.

Vision and organisation

Allan Crane, Volunteer Event Coordinator of the popular event, said the funding "made the world of difference to our Sculpture Event in Neerim South. It gave us the finances for professional signage, printing of event brochures and even a regional tourism brochure to support not just Neerim South but the whole district."

"Once you have the vision and organisation for your event set, the grant application is straightforward and the advice from the Shire is brilliant," said Mr Crane. "Just go for it and apply!".

Community groups and individuals seeking funding for their next community event or ambassadorship are encouraged to contact our Social and Community Planning team on 1300 229 229 during business hours or email grants@bawbawshire.vic.gov.au to make an appointment before applications close on Monday 8 August.

Benefit to the community

Mayor Cr Michael Leaney said, "Seeking funding through council's annual Community Sponsorship program is a fantastic way for individuals and not-for-profit groups in Baw Baw Shire to deliver and or compete in an event they may not have been able to otherwise."

"It is brilliant to see how this funding program can benefit our community in so many ways, from assisting 33 Little Athletes to compete in a State-wide competition, to helping maximise the promotion of a 3 day long, popular sculpture event in our shire's north!"

"If you're interested in learning more about council's sponsorships program, then get in touch with our team before applications for this round close on Monday 8 August". Cr Leaney said.
