Baw Baw Shire celebrates NAIDOC week with special events from 03 to 10 July 2022
From Sunday 3 July to Sunday 10 July, NAIDOC Week events are happening across Baw Baw Shire to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Each July, NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia, providing an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations' cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. The NAIDOC Week theme for 2022 is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! It intends to amplify voices and narrow the gap between aspiration and reality, good intent and outcome.

Delivering range of events
As part of NAIDOC Week 2022, Baw Baw Shire Council and the West Gippsland Arts Centre are proud to partner with local community members to deliver a range of exciting events that celebrate the culture and achievements of all First Nations people.
Drouin's Lionel Rose Jr is involved in delivering a number of community events this NAIDOC Week throughout the Shire and is looking forward to a big week following pandemic-affected 2020 and 2021.
"With the disruptions of Covid-19 over the past two years impacting celebrations, we are excited to be able to gather together and celebrate as a group and showcase our culture with the wider community," said Mr Rose.

Sunday 3 July
Free community screening of ABLAZE
The true story of the first Aboriginal filmmaker William Bill Onus Ablaze tells of Bill Onus, a Yorta Yorta and Wiradjuri man from Victoria, a truly heroic cultural and political figure who revived his peopleʼs culture in the 1940s and ignited a civil rights movement that would, against enormous odds, change the course of history.

Three Women on Kurnai Country Creative Corner
Learn about a sculpture honouring three women who significantly impacted the lives of the Kurnai people from Drouin with a creative corner display featuring the Three Women on Kurnai Country maquette (model) that will be recreated in a bronze sculpture by contributing artists Jessie McLennan, Rebecca Vandyk-Hamilton and Jeannie Haughton in collaboration with Kurnai Elder Aunty Cheryl Drayton.

Thursday 7 July
A free community screening of Wash My Soul in the River's Flow Seventeen years in the making, 'Wash my soul in the river's flow' is a cinematic reinvention of a legendary concert. A celebration of the love, lives and luminous talent of artists Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter.

Friday 8 July
Deadly Hoops Basketball and Free Community Lunch, Come along for mini games of dodgeball and basketball before watching an official match made up of teams of Traditional Owner youth, Victoria Police and Baw Baw Shire Council staff before a free community BBQ lunch and community yarning time.

Xavier Rudd's Jan Juc Moon Tour 2022
Xavier Rudd's Jan Juc Moon Tour 2022 with special guest Marlon x Rulla. Xavier Rudd announces his 2022 Australian tour, in celebration of the release of his forthcoming 10th studio album 'Jan Juc Moon', out on 25 March.
Joining Xavier will be support act Marlon x Rulla, a dynamic First Nations duo who burst onto the scene in 2020 performing on some of the nation's biggest stages - opening for Midnight Oil at WOMADelaide, rocking Bass in the Grass in Darwin, Party in the Apocalypse in Tassie and wowing 30,000 fans at the AFL'S Sir Douglas Nicholls round.
