Anthony Basford resigns as East Gippsland Shire Council CEO accepting position at City of Greater Geelong

Anthony Basford resigns as CEO of East Gippsland Shire Council. Mayor praises his leadership during crises. Basford acknowledges honour, highlighting community support. He's accepted a position at City of Greater Geelong.

Anthony Basford has resigned from his position as Chief Executive Officer of East Gippsland Shire Council. Mayor Cr Tom Crook said while it was disappointing to receive the CEO's resignation, Council and East Gippsland are well placed to forge ahead. "Anthony has led the organisation exceptionally well, including during some very difficult circumstances. He has provided stability and leadership and nurtured a great depth of experience across the organisation that will continue to serve us well."

Praise for departing leader

Cr Crook said, "His leadership through the bushfires, pandemic and other natural disasters is a testament to his dedication to East Gippsland during his five-year tenure. "On behalf of the Councillors and the Mayors who have worked with Anthony over the past two terms of Council I wish him every success in the next opportunity."

Mr Basford said it had been an "absolute pleasure and honour" to be the CEO of East Gippsland Shire Council for the last five years, guiding the organisation through some of the toughest times. The communities of East Gippsland are strong and resilient, and I believe the work my team and I have done over the last five years to support them will make a lasting difference."

"This organisation continues to put the community front and centre. I have witnessed, time and time again our staff's commitment to supporting communities thrive through the delivery of amazing services, projects and initiatives," Mr Basford said.

CEO transition plans

Mr Basford said, "I have been fortunate to have worked with two Councillor groups who care about the community and East Gippsland, and to have worked with Mayors who are passionate about East Gippsland and supported me in my role as CEO."

Cr Crook said Council would now work with the outgoing CEO on the timing of his departure and the options for the recruitment of a new CEO within the obligations of the Local Government Act.

"We are fortunate to have great depth in our organisation. This will ensure we continue to deliver for our community now, during the recruitment of a new CEO and well into the future," Cr Crook said. Mr Basford has accepted a role at the City of Greater Geelong as Executive Director City Life.
