Service and responsibilities in the area

Council plays a vital role in directly managing the environment within the municipality. Some of its key service and responsibility areas include:

  • Maintenance of council-owned urban spaces, trees, parks, gardens and natural reserves
  • Assessment and implementation of environmental planning controls under the Victorian Planning Provisions
  • Waste management services
  • Monitoring electricity use and generation of greenhouse gas emissions across Council owned assets
  • Managing the risk of climate change on its operations and services

In areas that are not Council managed, Council partners with a number of external organisations and government authorities to ensure management practices are done so in the most sustainable manner as possible.

Managing biodiversity and environmental assets

Mayor Cr Danny Goss said, "This strategy is so important as it sets out the approach to managing Baw Baw's unique biodiversity and environmental assets for now and into the future. It's something that impacts us all. The environment essentially guides how we work, play and live here in Baw Baw Shire."

"It relates to our open spaces, our buildings, our tourism and the overall livability of the Shire. I strongly encourage our residents to review the existing strategy, fill in the survey questions and don't miss this opportunity to have your say and help shape a sustainable future for Baw Baw." Cr Danny said.

Send your feedback

To develop the new strategy, the Council is now seeking community input on the environmental matters, priorities and sustainability practices that are most important to them. This feedback will inform the draft strategy that will preserve Baw Baw's natural environment and promote the Shire as a vibrant and healthy place to live.

To review the current strategy in full and to provide your input, visit the Have Your Say section of Council's website. This round of consultation is open until 5pm Friday 15 October 2021.
