Expression of interest on Walhalla public art installation wanted by Baw Baw Shire Council until 11 August 2022

Baw Baw Shire Council is seeking expressions of interest from artists to create a vibrant public art piece to be installed within the township of Walhalla.

As part of the council project guidelines, the proposed artwork must celebrate the town's gold mining history while also recognising the resilience displayed by the Walhalla community after experiencing a series of storm and fire events in recent years. Council is committing $90,000 towards the public art project as part of funding received from Emergency Management Victoria's 2019 South East Victorian Bushfires - Community Recovery Fund.

The artwork will be an impressive metal sculpture in the landscape for visitors and the community, celebrating and promoting the shire as a vibrant and attractive region to visit

How to apply

Interested and eligible applicants are encouraged to submit an expression of interest with a proposed concept design via council's Resilience Sculpture in Stringers Park, Walhalla web page by Thursday 11 August. Artists and collectives looking to apply must be eligible to work in Australia and have a current ABN. Applicants are asked to please include:

• Written response to the project brief (maximum of 500 words)
• Design ideas for proposed artwork (digital image: photoshop or sketches) - up to three design ideas can be submitted
• 5 to 10 images that demonstrate the artist's experience and style of work
• Description of involvement in at least one similar project, especially noting previous experience of community engagement
• Copy of current public liability insurance certification. (Note: submission will be accepted if this is not currently available but will be required prior to signing of the contract if a proposal is selected.)
• Curriculum vitae and contact details
• Two referees' contact details, relating to previous projects

Mayor Cr Michael Leaney said, "Walhalla is one of Australia's most significant heritage villages with a history of boom, bust and hardship. The township of Walhalla has over the past 159 years endured fire, flood, disease, economic collapse, neglect and renewal. Against the odds Walhalla has become one of the leading tourism towns in the country."
