After two years travelling South Gippsland Shire, the ArtCubes are coming to Leongatha! South Gippsland Shire Council's trio of portable creative spaces, the ArtCubes, will be installed in the eastern corner of Safeway carpark (close to the council offices and Bendigo Bank) from July 18 to October 29. Throughout this time, council is excited to offer month-long creative residencies for each ArtCube over three months.
South Gippsland ArtCubes return to Leongatha, offering month-long residencies for creatives from July 18 to October 29. Apply now!
ArtCubes residency opportunity
If you have a creative practice of any kind - if you are a visual or sound artist, a performance artist, writer, photographer, or maker of any kind, we invite you to apply for an ArtCubes residency. What does an ArtCubes residency involve?
You will be offered the use of an ArtCube to activate as you like. This might include the installation of your creative works for show, setting an ArtCube up as a making or recording space, utilising the space to sell or promote your creative works.
The ArtCubes will offer visibility for your creative practice, as well as the potential for connection to the Leongatha community and other ArtCube artists. There is no minimum time that you need to be present in your Cube. At bare minimum, you can create a static installation in your space, to be viewed through the ArtCube windows with the doors closed.
Activate your art
For maximum involvement, you will be opening the ArtCubes to the public as many days as you are able, connecting with passers-by, inviting them into your space to engage with your works. Please note however, proposals with high levels of activation are preferred over proposals with lower levels of activation. While you are expected to present a feasible proposal of activity that is managed by you, council will provide support in the following:
- Thorough induction and handover of the space
- Manual for running the space
- Toolkit with an extensive range of fasteners and associated materials to assist in hanging and de-installing your space
- Practical support
- Examples of how the ArtCubes have been activated in the past
- ArtCubes are powered by solar - if additional power is required, council will assist in connection to mains power
Financial support
Each residency will receive $600 per month per ArtCube
Residency times
There are three months available to participate in:
- Monday 4 August to Monday 1 September 2025
- Monday 1 September to Monday 29 September 2025
- Monday 29 September to Thursday 6 November 2025
Who can apply?
ArtCubes residencies are open to all applicants who present a feasible proposal of creative activity for an ArtCube. Please note, all resident artists must hold Public Liability Insurances up to $20,000,000 (contact council for advice around this - details as below) Applications will be accepted from individuals as well as groups. Preference will be given to:
- Leongatha residents (first) / South Gippsland residents (second)
- First Nations creatives
- Younger creatives (ages 18 to 25)
To apply, submit an expression of interest (EOI). Applications close 5pm Monday 16 June 2025. An information session will take place on Thursday 29 May 2025. Please meet onsite next to council's main office at 9 Smith Street, Leongatha (at the eastern corner of the Woolworths carpark). Send applications via ArtCubes in Leongatha page.
