Bass Coast Shire Council awarded the tender for the Project at its December 2021 meeting, with construction initially anticipated to get underway in February. Limited availability of supplies has caused a delay to the start time, however work can now begin with the project expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Improved access

The redevelopment will create an accessible, intergenerational space that offers a variety of challenging experiences for all age groups and abilities, while also providing natural shade and park amenities for residents and visitors. The design draws upon extensive community consultation with elements reflecting the Shire's coal mining history and amazing natural environment.

The project will also include the installation of a drinking fountain, bike racks, pathways, fencing and an accessible barbecue, as well as landscaping and irrigation works and changes to the internal road configuration to create more parking and improved vehicle access.

Redevelopment funding

As part of the redevelopment, the existing playground will be removed. The new playspace will be constructed under the established trees for shade. No significant vegetation removal is required for this project.

"This project would not have been possible without the support from the Victorian government, with grants of $700,000 through Sports and Recreation Victoria and $350,000 from the Growing Suburbs Fund. Council is also contributing $720,000 to this exciting community project." Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan said.

Appreciating community patience

While construction is underway, the toilet facilities, existing shelter and surrounding grounds will remain open where possible. The exit from the park onto Graham Street will be permanently closed and a section of the footpath will be closed as well. Appropriate traffic/pedestrian control measures will be in place during the works.

This project will include the use of large plants and machinery which might be noisy at times. Council understands that these works may present an inconvenience to nearby residents and users of the park and appreciates their patience. The contractor will make every effort to minimise disruptions during construction.
