Traralgon-based artist Marilyn Fenton to develop public artwork in Morwell and Traralgon stations as part of the Gippsland Line Upgrade

The Andrews Labor government has enlisted local artist Marilyn Fenton to develop permanent public artworks for Morwell and Traralgon stations as part of the Gippsland Line Upgrade.

The Traralgon-based artist, Marilyn Fenton will create two artworks - one for each of the upgraded stations - using traditional Gunaikurnai line patterns depicting men and women, travel, meeting and the five Gunaikurnai clans. The artworks will be sandblasted into the stations' forecourts with custom stencils.

Reopened to passengers

Construction at Morwell and Traralgon stations will be finished by the end of the year, with Bunyip and Longwarry stations reopened to passengers this past weekend following a major construction blitz, providing safety and security benefits to Gippsland locals and visitors.

At Traralgon Station, a new accessible overpass is to be installed next month. The 104-tonne bridge will be lifted into place using a 650-tonne crane, with coaches replacing trains from Sunday, 6 November to Sunday, 13 November.

Improving safety and accessibility

Signalling work will also take place to prepare for the installation of new tracks to support the new platforms at Bunyip, Longwarry, Morwell and Traralgon. The bus loops at Bunyip and new car park at Longwarry will be open to passengers, while new lighting and CCTV has been installed on the existing platforms boosting safety for station users.

Resurfacing, line marking and the installation of tactiles to improve the safety and accessibility of the existing platforms were also completed while the stations were closed. The new second platforms will enable more frequent and reliable services, and improve safety, accessibility and comfort for passengers.

Connecting people in Gippsland

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said, "These upgrades will deliver improved services and stations - better connecting people in Gippsland with work, education and each other."

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said, "As part of our ongoing work in transition and development for the Latrobe Valley it's enormously important that a local artist will be reflecting the character, journeys, and stories of the region."
