Baw Baw Shire advances $35M Culture and Connection Precinct with library, learning centre, and community spaces in Warragul
Baw Baw Shire progresses the $35 million Culture and Connection Precinct, featuring a library, learning centre, and community spaces, with contractor selection underway and final grant funding still being pursued.
Baw Baw Shire Council continues to progress the $35 million Culture and Connection Precinct, which will include a state-of-the-art library and learning centre in the heart of Warragul. The first major step in the procurement process has begun, with contractors invited to submit an expression of interest for construction of the project.
Baw Baw Culture and Connection Precinct will enhance underutilized areas near the Arts Centre and Civic Park, creating vital social infrastructure for Warragul's growing community
Project preparation progress
Baw Baw Shire Mayor Cr Danny Goss said this process acted as a shortlisting of suitable contractors that council could work with when the time comes to go out for tender. "Projects of this magnitude involve complex and lengthy planning and procurement processes before anything even happens on the ground. While we continue to seek the final $5 million in grant funding, we're doing everything we can to be as prepared as possible for when that time comes", he said.
Council has committed $10 million towards the project, with the balance being largely funded through various State and Federal government grants. Cr Goss said the new council was committed to delivering this incredible multi-generational facility for the growing community. "This will be the largest project ever delivered by council with enormous and lasting benefits for the community for generations to come", the Mayor said.
Community connection hub
Mayor Goss said,"We are building on the success of our redeveloped arts centre, which has undeniably added immense value to community life since its completion. Sitting side by side, this new facility will merge our thriving arts and entertainment precinct with a state-of-the-art library and learning centre for all interests, ages and abilities."
"We are creating a truly community-focused precinct, where everyone can connect and learn, gather for events and enjoy the beautiful surrounding parkland, all walking distance to the thriving town centre, " he said.
Culture and connection
The multi-level facility will feature:
- New community library, including a children's library, maker's space, video gaming, reading, collection and study areas
- Creative and cultural space
- Community meeting rooms
- Consulting rooms
- Co-working spaces
- Public terrace area
- Public amenities including a parent's room and accessible facility
- Plaza and pedestrian connection to the West Gippsland Arts Centre
