Council would like to thank the meeting organisers for the opportunity to attend and provide background information about Council's recent decision to demolish the Latrobe City Visitor Information Centre in Traralgon, while recovering any salvageable items with a social or cultural value from the building.

In addressing the audience, Latrobe City Council Mayor, Cr Kellie O'Callaghan noted that last night's conversation would inform future engagement and discussion among councillors

Respecting views of the community

Cr O'Callaghan said, "In listening to the concerns of the community, my fellow councillors have reflected on the sentiment of the broader community and have taken the opportunity to lodge a Notice of Motion which has been informed through last night's engagement. This motion will be presented at Monday night's December council meeting, we welcome interested community members or groups to speak to the item,"

"Council acknowledges and respects the views of the community and is committed to undertaking further consultation with the community on this matter. I thank those community members, from a broad cross section of our community, who took the time to speak openly and with passion about the future of the Methodist Church. Through this discussion we were also provided with a further insight into the community's desire to see the history of our City retained." Cr O'Callaghan continued.

Virtual meeting agenda

Cr O'Callaghan said,"I can assure the community that nothing has progressed beyond council's initial discussions. There is no immediacy to stop anything from happening." In presenting to the group, council representatives covered topics including:

  • Management of the site
  • The Traralgon Railway Precinct Master Plan
  • Heritage considerations
  • Structural assessment details
  • Confirmation that no further planning or works, relating to demolition, have commenced

Members of the public who have an interest in an open item on the advertised agenda, such as the deferral of the decision regarding the visitor information centre notice of motion, can register to attend the virtual meeting.

Requests must be provided to our Governance team and can be contacted via email egovernance@latrobe.vic.gov.au or on 1300 367 700 before 12 noon on the day of the meeting, Monday 6 December. A copy of the presentation can be viewed at visitor information centre community meeting.
