Bass Coast Council Recycling Island Resources project wins AustStab Award of Excellence for Sustainability
Recycling Island Resources, used recycled materials to revamp a road, preventing the need for new materials and saving 2,353 tonnes of construction and demolition materials from being discarded. It also reduced truck movements and saved diesel.
Bass Coast Shire Council has been recognised for sustainability and innovation at the recent 11th AustStab Awards of Excellence taking the top prize in the category of "Excellence in Pavement Recycling and Stabilisation in local government." The AustStab Awards of Excellence are a prestigious recognition of excellence in pavement recycling and stabilisation, and they showcase the best and brightest in our industry. Council's winning project, "Recycling Island Resources," is a testament to our dedication to sustainability.

Sustainable road revamp
Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan said, "Through innovative practices, we've reused 3,181 tonnes of recycled materials to revamp a road, all within its existing location. This not only prevented the need for 2,558 tonnes of new materials but also saved 2,353 tonnes of construction and demolition materials from being discarded. Moreover, we've drastically reduced truck movements, covering over 29,400 fewer kilometres and saving 16,400 litres of diesel." said Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan.

Innovation in recycling
Acting CEO, Greg Box said, "This award is a significant recognition for our approach at Bass Coast and is yet another demonstration of why we are statewide leaders in innovation in waste management and the circular economy."
This award is specifically aimed at local government initiatives that have adopted innovative pavement recycling and stabilisation practices and that have resulted in better outcomes for local government constituents.
