Connectivity boost to Nicholson, Woodglen, Calulu and Bairnsdale Aerodrome with over $2M funding through federal Regional Connectivity Program

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has welcomed the confirmation of projects for round two of the Regional Connectivity Program (RCP).

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said it was a win for common sense and regional communities despite the new government taking five months to re-approve the projects. "The projects at Bairnsdale Aerodrome, Nicholson and Woodglen and Calulu would improve telecommunications for residents, emergency services and visitors."

Improving mobile phone reception

Mr Chester said, "Improved connectivity is essential for the region's communication but also the visitor economy and future economic growth." Mr Chester said Gippsland received over $2 million of funding for the three projects announced before the election in May.

"These projects were budgeted and supported by the local communities and the previous government so this delay is frustrating," Mr Chester said.

Mr Chester said, "A booster will be installed for the Nicholson community which has suffered with a large mobile black spot while towers installed at Woodglen and Calulu will improve mobile phone reception in the Lindenow horticultural area."

Getting the work underway

Mr Chester added, "The Bairnsdale Aerodrome is used as a hub during emergencies and supports the work of emergency services such as the Australian Defence Force and aerial firefighting."

Projects include:

• Bairnsdale Aerodrome - $512,050
• Calulu and Woodglen - $1.149 million
• Nicholson - $884,000

"Now it is important we get this work underway so communities can benefit from improved communications sooner." Mr Chester said.
