Community feedback wanted to help update Domestic Animal Management Plan for South Gippsland Council
South Gippsland Shire Council is seeking community feedback to help update its Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP)
The Domestic Animal Management Plan is a four-year document that provides a strategic approach toward the promotion of responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. As part of this engagement, council is particularly keen to hear from all residents about their views on cat curfews and dogs on leads. A survey was previously undertaken by council on these issues in 2018 but the implementation of any changes was postponed, along with the review of the General Local Law.
Council encourages all community members, whether you own a pet or not, to provide input and help them understand what's important to you so they can reflect that in the draft plan
Complete the survey
These issues are now being revisited along with other key animal topics such as de-sexing, litter bags, animal businesses and animal registration. Your feedback will help ensure the Plan aligns with community expectations. Feedback can be provided via an online survey or written submission at Your Say South Gippsland Domestic Animal Management Plan web page.
An online workshop will be held on Thursday 8 September from 7.00pm to 8.00pm. Registration can be made via the Your Say platform. There will also be four in-person engagement events where you can drop-in and have your say:
- Foster: Thursday 1 September (9.00am to 11.00am) in the alleyway next to Foster Foodworks (weather depending - alternate venue is the Visitor Information Centre)
- Mirboo North: Thursday 1 September (12.00pm to 2.00pm) at the Mirboo North & District Community Foundation
- Leongatha: Tuesday 6 September (9.00am to 11.00am) in the foyer of Memorial Hall
- Korumburra: Tuesday 6 September (12.00pm to 2.00pm) at the Korumburra Meeting Room Resident's that participate in the survey have the option of going into a draw to win a hamper of local produce to the value of $200
The Plan will provide council with a strategic approach towards promotion of responsible pet ownership, providing balance to the needs of pet owners and non-pet owners in our community.
Connecting through feedback
South Gippsland Shire Council Mayor, Mohya Davies said, "This engagement is an important first step in creating the South Gippsland Domestic Animal Management Plan. The feedback obtained from the surveys, listening posts, online workshops and general submissions will be used to develop a new plan which will acknowledge and reflect the important role domestic animals have in South Gippsland."
"We want to hear from anyone that has a connection with South Gippsland regardless of whether or not they have a pet themselves. The more feedback we receive the better as it will help us to understand what animal issues are important to you." Mayor Davies said.
