Sutton Street $1.9M reconstruction in Warragul gets underway

Road reconstruction, widening, and footpath works are underway on Sutton Street, Warragul.

By news@gippsland - 19th January 2022 - Back to News

The $1.9 million upgrades will see the sections between Normanby Street to Davine Street and Bowen Street to Hope Street reconstructed, widened, and resurfaced, with kerb and channel, improved drainage and footpath works also included in the project.

Works to ensure safety

The works will deliver significant safety improvements, a smoother drive and increased footpath access for residents. Roadside drainage works began before Christmas, with crossroad drainage now the focus. Over coming weeks, the project will progress to removal of the existing surface, reconstruction, and resurfacing.

During this time, the road will be temporarily reduced to one lane. Drivers are asked to take care and follow all signage and traffic management directions when in the area. Weather permitting, completion of the project is expected by the end of April 2022.

Getting improvements done

Mayor Cr Michael Leaney said, "We know how keen residents are to have these works done. It is no secret that Sutton Street's surface was past its use-by date. And, with increasing foot traffic in the area, we have heard the calls from residents that footpaths are needed."

"We are delighted to be able to push on and get these much-needed works done thanks to funding secured from the Federal Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure and Roads to Recovery funds. It's a great outcome for drivers and pedestrians alike." Mayor Leaney said.

Great news to the community

Central Ward Councillor Danny Goss said, "The thousands of people who use Sutton Street every day will welcome the news that work has finally started. It has been a long, difficult, and costly process to get here but that is all behind us now."

"Without doubt these two stretches of road are the worst conditioned in Warragul and reconstruction was urgent. But without Government assistance the works would have been delayed years. Like the rest of the people of Warragul I cannot wait to see the finished result. Works include footpaths east of Normanby Street which will add greatly to the liveability of that part of Warragul." Cr Danny Goss said.
