Community continues to rally behind 'Save the Newhaven Jetty'
Over 2,300 signatures for the Save the Newhaven Jetty petition were delivered to Melina Bath, Member for Eastern Victoria. She praised the community's dedication and is pushing for parliamentary debate and information on repair costs.
Over 2300 signatures have been collected for the Save the Newhaven Jetty petition and delivered to The Nationals' Member for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath for submission in state parliament. Expressing her admiration for the community's dedication, Ms Bath emphasised the significance of obtaining sufficient petition signatures to meet the threshold for debate in parliament. "The commitment shown by locals is truly remarkable, and it signifies their will to see their jetty restored and reopened."
Locals will keep collecting petition signatures as they await details on repair costs and engineering reports. The neglect of valuable public assets by the Allan Labor government is deeply concerning
Government neglects assets
In addition to sponsoring the community's petition, Ms Bath has also filed a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to obtain critical information regarding the Jetty's closure, with a response expected by mid-August. Ms Bath said the community is alarmed that there is no state government funding or priority for the jetty's repair.
"Locals will continue to gather petition signatures while waiting for the facts on the repair costs and engineering reports. It is highly concerning that valued public assets are being neglected by the Allan Labor government," said Ms Bath.
Acknowledging the effort of locals, Ms Bath thanked everyone involved in the ongoing campaign to the Save Newhaven Jetty. "Amanda Keilar, Ben Dennis and Brian Johnson have been integral in holding face to face conversations to garner signatures, and I commend them for their hard work," she said.
