Bridges at Shearwater Estate in Cowes to be upgraded

The decking and handrails of two bridges within Shearwater Estate in Cowes will be replaced in coming months.

By news@gippsland - 19th November 2021 - Back to News

The existing timber decking and handrails on both the eastern and western bridges have significantly deteriorated and need to be replaced. This $116,500 project is a continuation of recent eastern bridge deck replacement works and is fully funded by Bass Coast Shire Council's 2021/22 Capital Works Open Space Renewal Program.

While work is being carried out, access to the bridges will not be permitted. Appropriate pedestrian measures and signage will be in place

Slip resistant new decking

The replacement of the timber decking will start later this month and take around three weeks to complete. The replacement of the handrails will start in late January 2022 and take around two weeks to complete.

The new decking material is made using recycled plastic which is more UV and slip resistant than timber. It is also resistant to

  • Corrosion
  • Moisture
  • Termites
  • Splitting
  • Rotting and cracking
  • Doesn't need repainting

The existing handrails will be replaced with a UV resistant fibreglass, which will provide a sturdier handrail system. The use of these materials is consistent with Council,s Environmentally Sustainable Design Policy.

Minimised disruptions

The works will include the use of large plants and machinery and might be noisy at times. Council understands that these works may present an inconvenience to nearby residents and appreciates their patience during these times. The contractor will make every effort to minimise disruptions during construction.
