Baw Baw Shire honours local heroes at Australia Day Awards and citizenship ceremony celebrations 2025
Brief:Baw Baw Shire honoured outstanding individuals and groups at the 2025 Australia Day Awards, celebrating community service, with 34 new citizens welcomed and local celebrations planned across the Shire on 26 January 2025.
Four outstanding individuals and groups have been honoured for their significant local service at the annual 2025 Baw Baw Shire Council Australia Day Awards held at the West Gippsland Arts Centre last night. Additionally, six individuals and community groups were also awarded medallions in recognition of their community contributions.

Honouring local heroes
Baw Baw Shire Mayor Cr Danny Goss hosted the evening, commending the outstanding people who go above and beyond for their peers and community. "Each year we receive nominations detailing incredible stories of people across Baw Baw Shire."
"We are so proud to formally recognise the many local legends who give so much of themselves to make our Shire a better place for everyone. Congratulations to each and every award category and medallion recipient, we thank you for your tireless service to our community," he said.
Baw Baw Shire celebrates
All Councillors were in attendance to present awards and medallions and show their support for award winners. Wednesday evening's awards night also included a keynote speech by Gippsland-local disability advocate Bianca Bassett who works for Get Skilled Access, a disability inclusion consultancy founded by Dylan Alcott. Community members are encouraged to join in one of the 16 local celebrations taking place on Sunday 26 January in townships across Baw Baw Shire.
The category award winners for 2025 are:
- Citizen of the Year - Kylie Sage
- Young Citizen of the Year - Maxx Jenkins
- Community Organisation of the Year - SES Warragul Unit
- Community Event of the Year - The Restorative Power of Nature and Gardens by the Warragul & District Garden Club
- Medallion - Jason Rantall
- Medallion - Merilyn Hall
- Medallion - Mia Brighton
- Medallion - 1st Trafalgar Scout Group
- Medallion - Trafalgar Holden Museum
- Medallion - Barkin' Mad Ultra Event by Hair of the Dog Rescue Inc.
Additionally, 34 people from 19 countries will become new Australians at a Citizenship Ceremony to take place in Warragul on Australia Day. For more community event details go to Australia Day Community Events website.
