Join in and learn about the Bass Coast Walk for Reconciliation on 26 May 2022

Council invites everyone to join Bass Coast Walk for Reconciliation on 26 May 2022, a joint media release from the Bass Coast Reconciliation Network.

Bass Coast Reconciliation Network invites everyone to come together for two significant events to learn, heal and explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation. The events commence with National Sorry Day which is held on 26 May each year. National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can play our part in the healing process.

Council is committed to an ongoing process of reconciliation and community strengthening through building strong community relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities

Event schedules

Join us from 11am on Sorry Day for a Welcome to Country, morning tea and yarns at the Nobbies Ocean Discovery Centre while looking out over the beautiful coastline of Millowl. Each year National Reconciliation Week is held between 27 May and 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey, the successful 1967 Referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

The theme for this year's National Reconciliation Week is 'Be Brave. Make Change' which encourages us all to explore how each of us can contribute to reconciliation by being active participants. In a demonstration of solidarity, we invite everyone to come together to walk side by side for a Bridge Walk across Phillip Island bridge on Tuesday 31 May.

Please meet at the San Remo Foreshore at 11am for a smoking ceremony and then, from 11.30am, we will make our way from San Remo and across the bridge to the Graydens Reserve, Newhaven, on Millowl (Phillip Island) for a BBQ, flag raising, mural painting and yarning.

Desire for reconciliation

This year marks 22 years since the monumental Sydney Harbour Bridge walk, renowned as the largest political demonstration ever held in this country's history. Bridge walks held right across the country captured Australia's desire for change and reconciliation. Bass Coast Reconciliation Network has members from:

• Bass Coast South Gippsland Reconciliation Network

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community members are also pleased to see organisations come together with the community to acknowledge and celebrate such important dates of significance.
