A community driven vision for the future of Latrobe City will lead the way over the next decade after council endorsed a suite of planning documents at a meeting on Monday night. Councillors adopted a 2021-2025 Council Plan based on locally-led priorities identified in a 10-year Community Vision, developed as part of an extensive engagement process.

Reflect community priorities

The voices of more than 1500 people from a diverse range of backgrounds and age groups were harmonised through community surveying, targeted conversations, listening posts and stakeholder engagement to form the vision. This vision and plan combine to reflect community priorities including health and wellbeing, economic diversification, urban amenity improvements and enhanced connectivity between neighbouring towns.

Opportunity to redefine

Latrobe City Mayor Sharon Gibson said it was important everyone had a say in shaping their own future as the region undergoes a major transformation. "We know Latrobe City's economy has to change and adapt as our traditional methods and industries are changing."

"That shift brings with it an opportunity to redefine ourselves as a regional city and explore new opportunities to grow and prosper. It's vital that we listen to our community and set goals that are in tune with what the people of Latrobe City envision for themselves and our municipality at large." Cr Gibson said.

Financial plan adopted

Council also adopted the Financial Plan 2022 - 2031 which outlines economic strategies to achieve the community vision. The plan notes the anticipated impact of Yallourn Power Station's closure in 2027/28 and the operational costs associated with new major infrastructure developments as impending financial challenges for Latrobe City.
