Russell Northe calls for pedestrian safety improvements at Grey Street Primary School in Traralgon CBD

Member for Morwell Russell Northe has used Question Time in Parliament this week to highlight the need for school pedestrian safety improvements in and around Grey Street Primary School which is located in the heart of the Traralgon CBD.

Mr Northe is seeking the support and intervention of the Education Minister following the receipt of numerous complaints from parents of students, School Council representatives and the wider community with respect to their concern about the safety of school children and other pedestrians who frequent the Grey Street Primary School precinct.

Growing number of students in Grey Street Primary School, pedestrian safety is an important component of efforts to prevent road accidents and is needed to ensure for the safety of the students

Solutions to address

Mr Northe said, "With a large number of school children of approximately 500 students attending Grey Street Primary School which happens to be located at such a busy intersection, pedestrian safety is absolutely paramount"

Mr Northe highlighted that there had been many incidents and near misses in the area with a combination of built up traffic and high pedestrian numbers in and around the school precinct. The school and school community have identified a number of sensible solutions to address the current pedestrian safety issues that exist.

Coordinate and response

Mr Northe added, "Grey Street Primary School and it's School Council have been very proactive in seeking solutions for the area, including calling for the implementation of a supervised school crossing on Franklin Street adjacent to the school, and the installation of bollards at key points on Grey Street."

"My hope is that the Education Minister will intervene, support and coordinate a response that sees the proposed initiatives adopted and implemented as soon as possible. If pedestrian safety is not improved in this precinct I fear a serious incident or accident might occur and none of us want to see that happen". Mr Northe concluded.
