Mirboo North Pool reopens with updated facilities from $3.6M low interest loan from Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Victorian government scheme
Mirboo North's updated pool facilities are open in time for summer fun, thanks to a community sports loan from the Victorian Government.
On Wednesday, Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing formally opened the pool, made possible thanks to a $3.6 million low interest loan from the government's Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Scheme to South Gippsland Shire Council which delivered the project.
The 2021-22 Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Scheme will support the delivery of a new round of community sport and recreation infrastructure, providing organisations access to government guaranteed loans between $500,000 and $10 million
Project funding
The local community pitched in over $700,000 for the project through fundraising led by the Friends of Mirboo North Pool and Mirboo North Pool Committee, as well as $100,000 from the Mirboo North Bendigo Community Bank, additional $800,000 from South Gippsland Shire Council and a Federal Government contribution of $600,000.
The pool at Mirboo North has been an integral part of the community since 1904 and is widely used by the community for recreation, learn to swim programs and school swimming carnivals. The old pool had served the community for decades but was in need of a makeover.
The refurbished outdoor 25 metre pool is now up to modern standards while retaining its picturesque setting. There's also been upgrades to the learn-to-swim pool and a new water play area. New wet decks and new plant room further enhance pool users experience, safety, and water quality.
Pool upgrades
To complement the development of the aquatic area there is a new accessible pavilion with:
- Change and family rooms
- Community program room
- Kiosk
- Landscaping
- Car parking
The project is part of the Victorian Government's strong commitment to sport and active recreation, gender equality and encouraging all Victorians to get out there and get active.
The Community Sports Infrastructure Loans Scheme supports the delivery of community sporting infrastructure that will increase participation opportunities for Victorians, by encouraging organisations such as local government to bring forward projects by giving them access to government guaranteed loans between $500,000 and $10 million.
Boosting the economy
Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said, "The local community has been so passionate about this project, and I'm delighted the Victorian Government has been able to help make it happen."
"The timing has also been excellent - investments like these are all about creating jobs, stimulating local economies, and fast-tracking community recovery by improving health, wellbeing, and social and economic outcomes." Ms Shing said.
Receiving support for the project
South Gippsland Shire Mayor, Cr Mohya Davies said, "Council is pleased to have received strong support for the Mirboo North pool refurbishment from the local Mirboo North community and all levels of Government."
"The Victorian Government's loan scheme was particularly helpful as it enabled us to progress the project and deliver a fantastic new aquatic facility to the Mirboo North community." Cr Davies said.
