Upgrades at Gippsland Sports Park, Latrobe Valley's largest commences to boost sport, events, jobs and accessibility

Construction has begun on major upgrades to Gippsland Sports and Entertainment Park, enhancing facilities, boosting local sports participation, supporting events, and creating jobs through the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program.

Construction is now underway on upgrades at one of Latrobe Valley's largest sports venues, bringing a raft of new amenities and spaces that will give the community greater access to sport, recreation and events.

Upgrades include new pavilion, change rooms, field redevelopments, lighting, and parking at Gippsland's key sport and entertainment venue

Works officially begin

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing, representing Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence, today visited Morwell to officially mark the start of works at the Gippsland Sports and Entertainment Park, made possible by the Victorian government's Regional Sports Infrastructure Program.

Head contractor Building Engineering is leading construction at the site, which will include a new grandstand pavilion with change rooms and amenities, redeveloped and upgraded pitches with new lighting and player facilities, a new change facility and new car parking.

As well as being one of the region's major outdoor events venues, the park will continue to be the home of some beloved local sporting teams including Falcons 2000, Gippsland United FC, Latrobe Valley Soccer League and Gippsland Referees.

Legacy lives on

The old grandstand at the site will be demolished to make way for a new grandstand pavilion, which will continue to bear the name of Don Di Fabrizio, recognising the significance of his contribution to the community and the Park.

Mr Fabrizio was a prominent and valued member of the community who was president of the Morwell Falcons Soccer Club from 1969 to 1994. Today's event included a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony conducted by Traditional Owners, the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation, to mark the beginning of work on site and to recognise the project's connection to the country.

Upgrades boost participation

The upgrades will help increase sports participation and improve the region's capacity to host events, supporting local businesses and creating employment opportunities during the project's delivery. The Gippsland Sports and Entertainment Park upgrades are expected to be completed in late 2026.

The Gippsland Sports and Entertainment Park is one of four projects in the Latrobe Valley region and one of 16 projects across regional Victoria that are part of the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, making our communities even better places to live, work, stay and play. Thriving sporting future

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said, "We are so excited to see this important milestone reached, with a head contractor recently appointed and works now commencing on site, this project will ensure that our local sporting community continues to thrive for years to come."

Latrobe City Council Mayor, Cr Dale Harriman said, "We look forward to the commencement of these works, which will deliver a first-class facility - a major outdoor events venue that will not only support local community clubs but also attract visitors to the region, creating broader tourism and economic benefits."
