The future of South Gippsland coach services has been secured amid concerns that services would begin terminating at Pakenham from 1 July 2025. The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien said he had been alarmed to hear reports the Allan Labor government had plans to enforce a new timetable that would see VLine coaches from areas such as Yarram and Leongatha terminate at Pakenham where passengers would need to transfer to a train.

Public transport victory

Mr O'Brien said, "I was quick to follow this up with the office of the Minister for Public Transport to seek immediate assurances for our community. Initially I was advised that the community would be consulted on options later in the year and assured that no decisions had been made - at which point I made it very clear to the Minister's office that I would fight any such proposal."

Mr O'Brien said it was the following afternoon that the government confirmed that the coach service would continue to operate through to Southern Cross. "I was delighted to see the Allan Labor government rule out any plans to terminate Yarram/Leongatha coach services at Pakenham and force travellers to transfer to a train."

"This is a win for common-sense and proof that speaking out on issues that are important to the community can help influence the decision makers. It is so important for Gippsland South to maintain a strong local voice in Parliament to ensure the needs and wants of the community are heard," he said. Mr O'Brien said he was thankful to everyone who raised this issue, emailed the Minister and signed the petition that was circulating online.
