Committee for Gippsland hosts Morwell roundtable to discuss local opportunities in Gippsland's net zero transition

Committee for Gippsland hosted a roundtable in Morwell with government leaders to explore local supply chain opportunities for Gippsland's transition to net zero, focusing on offshore wind and manufacturing growth.

Committee for Gippsland (C4G) hosted a new energy supply chain roundtable at the Morwell Innovation Centre with Assistant Minister for a Future Made in Australia, the Hon Tim Ayres and Senator for Victoria Dr Jess Walsh. C4G CEO Tony Cantwell welcomed the opportunity to engage with the Assistant Minister and Senator to explore local supply chain opportunities as part of the energy transition to net zero.

Gippsland energy opportunities

Mr Cantwell said, "We were pleased to host the Assistant Minister and Senator in Morwell and create the opportunity for local businesses in manufacturing, trades, and energy, as well as union and local government representatives to engage in supply chain discussions."

"The energy transition offers significant opportunities for Gippsland in supporting new investment across areas such as both offshore and onshore wind, including the enabling infrastructure required. It was fantastic to discuss how local industry in the Latrobe Valley and beyond can come together to leverage these opportunities to boost local manufacturing", Mr Cantwell said.

Gippsland wind alliance

C4G Board Member and Chief Development Officer at Southerly Ten, Erin Coldham, thanked Tim Ayers and Jess Walsh for their interest in Gippsland, and highlighted the importance of collaboration between renewable energy projects, local manufacturing companies, and government.

"We are grateful for Jess and Tim's support of Gippsland and their confidence in our region's industry capabilities and skilled workforce. Gippsland is poised to become a national leader in the offshore wind sector, and collaboration will be crucial to ensure a successful transition while maximising opportunities for local suppliers", Ms Coldham said.

As part of its advocacy efforts, C4G recently launched the Gippsland Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA) in partnership with the Gippsland Climate Change Network (GCCN). The Alliance will deliver a local platform for cooperative action to support the delivery of an offshore wind industry in Gippsland, with the aim to create new jobs and strengthen local supply chains as Gippsland transitions from coal to cleaner forms of energy.
