The Draft Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan is open for feedback until 5.00pm Friday 5 August. The Plan brings together community priorities for health and wellbeing, the work of council and local organisations, and local health and wellbeing data to identify priorities and strategies for the next three years.

This draft Plan aims to be used by council and organisations that work closely with us to support improving the health and wellbeing of our community

Draft plan priorities

During the engagement for our Community Vision and council plan, we heard loud and clear how important health and wellbeing is to our community, so we are glad to have a draft ready for your feedback.

What's in the plan:

Five priorities - all of which align with the Victorian Health and Wellbeing Plan, and local organisation strategic and work plans
Range of strategies to guide how organisations will work to improve health and wellbeing over the course of the plan
Localised population focus with some strategies providing additional focus on some population groups experiencing greater inequity in health

Community satisfaction survey

South Gippsland Shire Council is heading in the right direction according to the latest Community Satisfaction Survey results. Council's score for Overall Council Direction this year was 51, six points higher than last year's result and twenty one points higher than 2019. The Community Satisfaction Survey is conducted annually by the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions on behalf of local governments in Victoria. A minimum of 400 local residents and ratepayers in each municipality are selected at random.

The survey measures the performance of councils, including the customer service they provide, how well they consult with their local community and their overall direction. Other positive indicators for South Gippsland Shire Council were that of the nine key areas, six areas were improved, one remained the same and two dropped by one point. The largest increase was for Customer Service, which was ten points up on the 2021 result.

The feedback about local roads is consistent with what was heard during the Shaping South Gippsland community engagement program. Council is seeking to improve this result through the allocation of additional road maintenance funding approved in this year's budget. The areas for improvement were in advocacy/lobbying and in sealed local roads. Both of these areas had reduced one point since last year's survey

Street light outages

Ausnet has advised some scheduled power outages that will affect the operation of street lights in some areas. Streetlights are likely to be impacted in:

Bena on Sunday 7 August between 10.00pm - 11.00pm and 4.00am - 5.00am
Nyora on Monday 8 August between 10.00pm - 5.00am

Request for tender

Council is seeking submissions from qualified companies/applicants for the:

RFT/332 - Design & Construction of a Pedestrian Bridge and Elevated Walkway at Leongatha Rail Precinct

A pre-tender meeting will be held on Wednesday 10th August at 11:00am at South Gippsland Shire Council Offices. All submitters are requested to attend. Tenders close 2pm AEST on Wednesday 24 August 2022. Documentation is available from council's e-Tendering Portal.

Areative industries strategy

South Gippsland now has a new Arts, Culture and Creative Industries Strategy after it was adopted at last week's council meeting. The strategy aims to strengthen creativity in our community by establishing a creative vision, goals, themes and a five-year action plan.

It builds on previous strategies and encourages the further development of a thriving arts and creative industry in South Gippsland. One of the first actions outlined in the strategy is the establishment of a South Gippsland Advisory Network who will work with council to guide the implementation of the strategy.

Other actions include support for youth-focused programs to provide mentorship and training in the creative industries sector, development of an events policy that supports the growth of cultural events, advocating for State and Federal funding for local creative projects and encouraging opportunities for creatives of all abilities.

Get ready, get techy

There are a range of apps that can help you stay informed during an emergency. But sometimes it can be difficult to know how to download and use them. During August and September, council is running free Get Ready. Get Techy training that will guide you - step-by-step - through the set-up process and show you how to get the most from your emergency apps.

Suburbs and regional towns

The state government's new Living Local Fund aims to support local councils and community groups to create better public spaces and improved streetscapes across Victoria.

Local councils and community organisations can apply for two types of grants:

Grants between $20,000 to $200,000 will be available for infrastructure projects, including new playgrounds and community gardens, splash pads, art installations and community halls upgrades
Grants between $2,000 to $20,000 will also be available for local councils and community organisations to undertake minor refurbishments, and buy new equipment such as kitchen appliances, laptops and audio-visual equipment

The Fund is designed to support a wide range of locally-led projects and equipment purchases for community organisations to improve livability. The Living Local Fund grant applications are now open and close on Sunday 14 August 2022. For more information, visit council's Living Local Grants web page.
