Street light project in South Gippsland Shire will save $9.4M in energy and capital costs when completed
Street lighting project is nearing its completion, the remaining 270 inefficient streetlights in South Gippsland Shire will be replaced later this year.
A bulk streetlight replacement project in South Gippsland is almost complete. Over 1,800 streetlights have been replaced with LEDs as part of the project, saving council up to $160,000 each year and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 300 tonnes per annum. The streetlight replacement project is being facilitated in conjunction with East Gippsland Shire Council and Wellington Shire Council, using collective buying power to reduce the cost of the project.
Over 5,000 energy efficient street lights will be installed as part of the project, with the energy and capital savings across the three councils estimated to be $9.4m over the life of the assets
Supporting resilience
The new lights are estimated to be 86 per cent more efficient than what was previously installed. The streetlight replacement project has been made possible with funding from the Australian government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
This program supports local councils delivering priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Making residents feel safer
South Gippsland Shire Mayor, Mohya Davies said, "It's great to see this project nearly complete in South Gippsland as it has many benefits for our community. In addition to the financial and environmental savings, improved street lighting also helps residents feel safer in our local townships. I would like to thank everyone involved in delivering this project for thinking collaboratively and working with other councils to produce savings for our community."
Mr Russell Broadbent MP, Member for Monash said, "The bulk replacement project will see a saving of approximately $9.4 million in energy and capital costs across all three councils over the lifetime of the assets. This saving will help councils redistribute funds where it really matters."
