Alice Pepper and Patricia Pittman with visiting artists David Hooke, Ling and Minna Leunig apply art along East Gippsland Rail Trail

Artwork that connects you to the land on which you stand: Gunaikurnai Country.

The artwork of five artists has collided into a display of colour and surprising locations along the East Gippsland Rail Trail (Bairnsdale - Orbost) in a new art experience, Under the Surface. There's artwork in unusual spaces - an old shed, a bridge, an underpass - that momentarily jolt you out of your nature-immersion to tell you a story about the land you stand, walk, e-bike, scoot or ride.

Under the Surface follows the route of the former Orbost railway line that winds its way from Bairnsdale toward the Victoria and NSW border through forests and farming landscapes

Indigenous experience

Each artwork explores harmony, nature and this special patch of the world, Gunaikurnai Country. Five sites help to connect everyone who uses the East Gippsland Rail Trail to the artwork and to the land.

Local Indigenous artists, Alice Pepper and Patricia Pittman, were joined by visiting artists, David "MEGGS" Hooke, Ling and Minna Leunig to create the series of solo and collaborative pieces, which can seen in the following locations:

• Nicholson River Bridge, Nicholson: Patricia Pittman
• Partelli's Crossing, Tostaree: Minna Leunig
• Orbost Butter Factory, Orbost: LING
• Nowa Nowa tunnel, Nowa Nowa: collaboration between Alice Pepper and David "MEGGS" Hooke

Working together with the local Gunaikurnai artist collective and community, the visiting artists developed learnings on Indigenous art practices, storytelling and the local environment. Together these artists tell the story of the Gunaikurnai land.
